A 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing coupe looks set to be one of the highlights of Mecum Auctions' Dallas auction on September 3-6.

The lot was sold to a dealer in the US in the year of its completion. Recently the engine was rebuilt, meaning the car now has only 200 miles on the clock.

The 300SL coupe was designed specifically for the US market and was, at the time, the world's fastest production car.

No estimates are available but comparable lots usually sell in the low millions. A 1956 Mercedes-Benz Gullwing sold for $1.1m last year.

A 1967 Chevrolet Camaro manufactured on the first day of production is another strong lot.

It was the first model to be delivered to Yenko Chevrolet in Pennsylvania, one of the biggest muscle car custom shops of the 1960s and 1970s.

It stayed in the workshop for a year and didn't appear to have been modified.

It has been claimed that the lot was used in design of the prototype for the legendary Yenko Super Camaro, a souped up version that replaced the standard engine with a powerful V8 - although this has not been proven.

In 2012, collector Gary Holub bought the car and rebuilt it to Yenko Super Camaro specifications.

Comparable lots often sell for around $350,000-450,000.
