I don't know what was wrong with people in the early 1950s. Here, I present to you what can only be described as an awesome 1954 Gibson Les Paul- the Gold Top version, which set the bar so high that Gibson had to start remaking them. But when they first came out Les Pauls were surprisingly not that popular, and by the late 60s they'd ceased making them. Of course that only lasted for a couple of years, but these early versions are now hugely rare. There are some slight nicks around the the body (this is good news) but bidding is already at $4,145 over at RR Auction, with another two days left to bid.
