1901 Pan-American 4c invert leads NOJEX auction with $37,500 estimate

A choice example of the 1901 Pan-American 4c invert stamp will headline in New Jersey

A 1901 Pan-American 4c invert stamp will see some of the highest bids at Regency Superior's auction at the forthcoming NOJEX stamp show.

1901 Pan-American 4c Invert Stamp Three of the six stamps were printed with an inverted vignette, with the 4c among the rarest

The show, now in its 50th year, is the annual exhibit of the North New Jersey Federated Stamps Clubs, taking place on May 24-26. The 4c stamp is set to lead bids, holding the highest estimate at $37,500.

The stamp was originally part of a series of six stamps created to commemorate the 1901 Pan-American Exposition held in Buffalo. Due to the two-colour design on the 1, 2 and 4 cent stamps, many were printed in sheets on which the central vignette was upside-down.

Of all the stamps in the series, the 1c is the most common; it isoften seenat auction.A fine example appeared with a $25,000 estimateat the OrcoExpo auctions in Anaheim, California, in January.

The 4c example in the present sale boasts exceptional centring with full original gum. It has previously been hinged and reperforated at the top, but remains in otherwise sound and fine condition. According to the auction house, nearly all existing examples have disturbed gum and many are thinned as a result of being removed from mounting paper.

Another example of the stamp sold at auction in April 2009 for $90,000.
