1901 De Dion Bouton races to $158,000 at classic car auction

A 1901 De Dion Bouton was one of the main attractions at Bonhams' sale in Hendon this week

Bonhams' sale of Motor Cars and Automobilia realised over 2.25m at Hendon on April 11, with more than 80% lots sold.

A 1901 De Dion Bouton, which made 97,200, was one of the most attractive and expensive lots of the day.

Capable of achieving speeds of up to 25mph, the French vehicle had been in the same ownership since 1958 and is a veteran of several concours as well as 25 successful London to Brighton runs.

It has also rallied in both Holland and the Isle of Man, where it successfully completed the TT course.

A 1933 Delage D8 Foursome Drophead Coup, which made 82,900, and a 1963 Bentley S3 Continental 'Flying Spur' Saloon, which achieved 79,600, may also make nice investments in due course.

Classic style with a modern price: 97,200

Another highlight was the unusual 1954 Allard Palm Beach Mk1 'Red Ram' Roadster, which was fought over by 20 bidders, pushing its price up to 52,100.
