1896 Nicholas II gold coin up 45% on valuation

The 1896 Nicholas II gold coin achieved $217,500 at Heritage Auctions in Chicago

An 1896 Nicholas II presentation gold 25 rouble coin has sold for $217,375 at Heritage Auctions' April 15-16 sale in Chicago.

It was valued at $150,000, equating to a 44.9% increase on estimate.

Only around 300 were ever produced to celebrate the Tsar's coronation, of which only a handful are known to exist today.

It is among the largest gold coins ever issued in Europe and is formedof 32.2g of gold.

Nicholas II ruled Russia for 23 years between 1894 and 1917, when he was forced to abdicate following the February revolution.

A Ferdinand III gold ducat was another highlight, achieving $164,500.

The coin was produced in Hungary in 1629 and features a strong impression of the king clad in armour with a large ruff. The reverse depicts the coat of arms of the royal family.

Ferdinand III occupies an important place in history due to his role in brokering the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, which ended the 30 years war and the 80 years war, and established borders that stand to this day.
