1802 JR-2 dime realises $70,500 at Heritage Auctions' Orlando sale

The finest known 1802 JR-2 dime achieved a strong result on July 13

The finest known example of an 1802 JR-2 dime sold for $70,500 at Heritage Auctions on July 13.

The lot crossed the block in the Summer FUN US Coins Signature Auction in Orlando, Florida.

It's one of around 250-300 surviving examples across all grades issued from four separate die plates and was unrecorded until recently.

It was sold in exceptional condition aside from a chip above the A in America and some light toning and surface marks.

An MS63-graded 1929 Indian head half eagle ($5)made $52,875.

Around 662,000 were minted in the year of issue, the majority of which never entered circulation due to the crash of 1929. Most are thought to have been melted down, with only a handful ever entering circulation.

Another MS63-graded 1929 half eagle sold for $46,000 at Heritage in 2010, equating to growth of 3.5% pa over four years.

An 1855-D gold dollar realised $52,875.

The lot was issued in the town of Dahlonega in a limited run of 1,811. It's among the most elusive coins produced at the Mint, with only around 75-100 examples surviving across a variety of grades.
