15 years on - her memorabilia continues to soar in value

However you feel about the monarchy, the figures for Princess Diana memorabilia are arresting

An embarrassment. Out of touch. An enduring reminder of class division.

Yes, the current British royal family have their critics.

Yet even the most fiery opponent of the monarchyhas to agree that they are big business. Worth an estimated 44bn ($70bn), they are the world's eighth largest "brand", according to a 2012 Brand Finance report.

And for investment-minded collectors, the numbers are just as impressive, led by one royal figure who has performed particularly well during the past decade.

Up 17.8% pa since 2000

Her autograph has grown by 17.8% pa since 2000, and is currently valued at 8,950 ($14,249), according to the PFC40 Autograph Index.

A slice of her wedding cake sold for 1,756 ($2,752) earlier this year - a 16.2% pa increase on the previous record for a slice from the wedding.

Her replica bridal shoes, made in case of a mishap with the first pair, sold for 36,000 ($56,600) in 2011.

And as you'll read in today's newsletter, a silver engraved apple she had especially commissioned beat its estimate by 23% this week.

I speak, of course, about Princess Diana.

But, you say, past results are no guarantee of future performance.

Quite right, yet I believe that Princess Diana memorabilia can continue to perform well over the mid to long-term.

Strong future performance

Diana captured the affections of the publiclike no other recent royal - 2.5bn people around the world watched her funeral in 1997.

Fifteen years on, this affection and fascination with the princess shows no sign of slowing. As the former royal correspondent Nicholas Owen told Time magazine recently: "When a magazine or newspaper editor almost anywhere in the world is a bit worried about circulation figures, he only needs to put the Princess of Wales on the cover."

Diana's name will never be out of the spotlight - she will be the former wife of the next monarch, and the mother of the one after that!

A strictly limited amount of Diana memorabilia available, coupled with the enduring allureof the princess and her collectibles, could well see prices continue on their upward trend.
