$12k necklace leads Christie's jewellery auction

Last year's market was buoyant for pearls and jewels, which should make for an exciting new year

Christie's is holding its Jewels of South Kensington auction in London, on January 19.

Valued at $10,459-12,068

Among the highlights is a diamond pendant necklace.

Approximately 1.90 carats, it features a single marquise diamond stone within a frame of white diamonds.

The frame is suspended from a diamond suspension loop and trace link neckchain.

Of recent manufacture, the necklace will carry an estimate of $10,459-12,068 when it goes to auction, next Tuesday.

Christie's will undoubtedly be hoping that the sale continues the success its Jewellery department enjoyedthroughout 2009.

Its most recent sale, in New York in December of last year, netted a total of $25m.

Bonhams, meanwhile, enjoyed its most successful-ever year for jewellery in 2009, endingthe yearwith a 2.2m sale.

"The strong prices achieved demonstrate just how buoyant the market is for natural pearls and period jewels that are fresh to the market," said Jean Ghika, Director of UK and Europe at Bonhams Jewellery department.

"Seventy-one percentof our buyers were private customers and our most valuable lots were bought by private individuals."
