The diamond devant de corsage is a star attraction at the Michael Wellby collection auction

A late 18th century diamond devant de corsage is set to provide one of the highlights at the auction of Michael Wellby's jewellery collection in December.

Featuring floral motifs and three detachable tassels, the stunning piece has an 80,000 ($129,115) high estimate.

The Mayfair, London silver dealer amassed a glittering selection of jewels over a period of 60 years, with his collection spanning the 16th to the 20th century.

Now 211 of those items are set to appear at Sotheby's London on December 11.

Among them is a late 19th century diamond tiara, which shares the leading estimate of 80,000. It features two sheaves of wheat set with diamonds.

Sotheby's Alexandra Rhodes, a jewellery specialist, commented: "Michael Wellby's jewellery collection was a labour of love. He and his wife Joy shared a passion for antique jewellery and they would often return from their travels with a new prize.

"Michael's unerring eye sought out the most beautiful and interesting objects. The intrinsic value of the gems was never the chief consideration, for him the charm of the design was the most important requirement. This sale will offer collectors the opportunity to acquire some wonderful masterpieces of the jeweller's art."

Tiffany lovers will have the opportunity to bid on a 1920 art deco bracelet, which is millegrain-set with a range of differently cut diamonds. It has a high estimate of 60,000 ($96,836).
