A chestnut and blue 1 Kangaroo stamp has sold with a 400% increase on estimate for $195,000
A unique, mint example of the 1 third watermark Kangaroo stamp has broken the world record for a single Kangaroo stamp at auction.
The world's most valuable single Kangaroo stamp
The chestnut and blue issue from1919 made $195,216 at Phoenix Auctions in Australia on May 9- a 400% increase on its $39,020 top estimate.
The previous world record for a single Kangaroo stamp stood at $176,930; it was set in New York in 2007 by a 1 stamp from the Arthur Grey collection.
The 1 stamp, which boasts the desirable sideways watermark, was offered from the celebrated collection of the late Stuart Hardy. Catalogue notes state that the stamp was Hardy's favourite.
