$1.2m Botero sculpture to sell at Christie's

A Latin American art sale will also feature paintings by Matta, Rufino Tamayo and Wilfredo Lam

Christie's is offering an impressive range of Latin American Art for auction later this month.

The range includes a particularly impressive selection of paintings by Matta, which any fans of surrealism will not wish to miss.

The works date from 1940s and 1950s and include some of Matta's most impressive pieces.

Fans of the Cuban artist Wifredo Lam will be excited to hear that an untitled piece of his, thought by many to depict a priestess sacrificing a black bird, is to be auctioned with an estimate of$600,000-800,000.

His contemporary, Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo is represented by his striking 1960 oil and sand painting Mujeres, which is an excellent example of his mature style. It is estimated at $600,000-800,000.

His later work, Hombreen el espacio, is valued at just $350,000-450,000.

The dominant figure in this sale, however, is Columbian Fernando Botero.

Two paintings of his, 2000 oil painting The Patio and 1990 pencil-and-watercolour Mother and Child are both valued at up to around $650,000-700,000.

The Patio is a beautiful lush green depiction of Columbia, more as the artist wishes it was than how it actually is; while Mother and Child is one of his loveliest works in the medium of watercolour.

"I use watercolors to try and define my position as an artist," Botero once commented. "I see them as small frescoes."

The top lot however is his bronze sculpture Mujer Fumando, which depicts a classic Botero voluptuous reclining nude created 22 years ago. The unconcerned, smoking figure has a high estimate of $1.2m.

The sale takes place in New York on November 17-18.
