On 16 April 1863, during the height of the American Civil War, Union monitor type armored gunboats under the command of Admiral David Dixon Porter fought passed a blockade of Confederate batteries at Vicksburg. This colored lithograph published by Currier & Ives, New York, 1863, depicts the fighting but probably not the noise and carnage..
