Captain Alan Hillgarth was the mastermind behind Operation Mincemeat, the classic piece of misdirection during the second World War that saw a corpse posing as a high ranking official carrying documents, which of course turned out to be fake. This Sextant (made in 1914) was owned by Captain Hillgarth and could well have been an important component into his building of naval intelligence. Estimated value for the tool is £600-800 from Charles Miller Ltd.
