Rare swatches from HMS Victory flag at auction
An extreamly rare pair of colored swatches from the ensign flag that flew above the HMS Victory during Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar on October 21, 1805 which was then later placed upon his coffin at his funeral at St. Paul’s Cathedral has attracted bids of up to $15118 at RR Auction.
They were removed from the flag at the close of Nelson's funeral service on January 9, 1806 by loyal sailors who wanted mementoes of their fallen commander.
The swatches have been placed into a locket along wth a color portrait of Nelson and are due to finish at RR Auction this week.
