Smashing the pre auction estimate of €300-400,000, one of the (many) bicorn hats worn by the Emperor Napoleon sold at auction on Sunday for €1.9 million (£1.5 million). The hat was worn by Napoleon at the Battle of Marengo in 1800. While the style of hat was fairly widespread, Napoleon is the only one to have worn his sideways, to make him stand out. Only 19 of Bonaparte's hats are known to still exist and it's hard to think of a more immediately recognisable figure from the hat alone.
