Lot 556: Great Air Race. A souvenir programme covering The Circuit of Britain Air Race, 4 pp. folded card detailing the 30 pilots and their aircraft, together with a brief itinerary of the five day event, the folded card has partly split, otherwise it is in good fettle. Sponsored by the Daily Mail, the event started from Brooklands in Surrey, on Saturday 22nd July 1911, proceeded as far as Edinburgh, and returned to Brooklands, via Exeter and Brighton on the 26th of the month, a total of 1010 miles. The race which had a prize of £10,000 for the winner, was really a time trial, with the machine completing the circuit in the fastest time declared the winner. Of the seventeen competitors who actually started, there were nine British pilots, including Colonel Cody in his Cody III aircraft. (1)
