Lot 475: American military officer (1826–1902) who, despite graduating near the bottom of his West Point class, served with distinction at First Manassas and in the Chattanooga and Atlanta Campaigns; he also served as aide-de-camp to William T. Sherman after the Civil War. ALS signed "Wm. D. Whipple," one page, both sides, lightly-lined, 5 x 8, Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead, June 25, 1877. Letter to General Thomas H. Ruger, in part: "The General says that you have his consent to be absent from Atlanta as requested. All that is necessary is to obtain consent of Gen. Hancock who of course will not refuse. Gen. Sherman leaves for an extended trip to the West on the 27th…It will doubtless be a pleasant tour and I would like much to go along." In fine condition, with expected mailing folds (one passing through the signature).
