Lot 436: ALS signed "Len Godfrey," one page both sides, 8.5 x 9.75, no date. Fantastic letter describing his role in the events of August 9, 1945, and the bombing of Nagasaki, in part: "I was a member of Fred Bock's crew, C-13. Our air craft was named Bockscar and took part in both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki missions...We carried the instrument package which was dropped simultaneously with the bomb. The instruments were designed to record the effectiveness of the blast...Cloud cover made it impossible to make a visual release...[so] General Sweeney decided to go to our secondary target Nagasaki. There was broken cloud cover there but Captain Beahan the bombardier was able at the last minute to make the release and the bomb fell away! My thoughts following the bomb run were, WOW!! The war will certainly end now." In fine condition, with show-through from writing to opposing sides and a trimmed top edge.
