Lot 431: French general (1856–1951) who was honored as a national hero for his defense of Verdun during World War I, but who was convicted after World War II of dealings with the enemy while head of the collaborationist Vichy regime. Untranslated ALS in French, signed "Ph. Petain," one page, 5.25 x 8.25, personal letterhead, May 31, 1930. In fine condition, with trivial toning and some brushing to last name of the signature.
