Lot 430: French general (1856–1951) who was honored as a national hero for his defense of Verdun during World War I, but who was convicted after World War II of dealings with the enemy while head of the collaborationist Vichy regime. Uncommon 4 x 5.75 postcard photo of Petain in his military uniform, signed in English and French in black ink, "Sentiments to yours, Ph. Petain." Reverse bears collector's ink notations. Affixed to a slightly larger black sheet. Pin holes to top and bottom edges, slight soiling and creasing, and fair contrast to the signature against his uniform, otherwise fine condition.
