Lot 429: Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War under Lincoln and Johnson (1802–1878). Civil War–dated LS, one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, Navy Department letterhead, October 10, 1864. Letter to Thomas T. Craven, commander of the USS Niagara. In part: "It appears that there are two clipper ships building at St. Nazaire, France well adapted for war purposes and there is good reason to believe that they are designed for the insurgents. Should these vessels be permitted to leave port under such circumstances as to warrant the belief that they are to make war against the United States, you will not hesitate to seize them." In fine condition, with a mild band of toning to one edge.
