Lot 414: French general and admiral (1729–1794) who led a fleet to aid the American rebels in 1778; though he sympathized with the people during the later French Revolution, he was loyal to the crown and thus executed by guillotine during the Reign of Terror. Manuscript DS in French, signed "Estaing," one page, 7.75 x 12.25, July 3, 1766. As a lieutenant general in the French Navy, d'Estaing signs a document for the captain of the Licorne ordering a soldier to be tied to cannon and flogged due to his lack of courtesy to an officer on board the ship. The number of strokes will be decided by the captain, and all crew members are ordered to be present for the flogging at nine o'clock in the morning. In fine condition, with central vertical and horizontal folds (the vertical fold passing through a single letter of the signature), foxing (primarily to upper edges), and a small hole to the body. RR Auction's Fine Autographs and Artifacts Auction 453 Sunday, 17th May 2015 Estimate: $200-400
