Lot 397: TLS signed "G. S. Patton, Jr.," one page, 7.25 x 10.25, Headquarters Second Armored Division, Fort Benning letterhead, April 17, 1941. Letter to his brother-in-law, Charles F. 'Chill' Ayer. In part: "Thanks very much for your kind note of congratulation. Apparently, our conversation together on the subject had a sub-conscious influence on the powers that be. Anyway I am delighted to have the rank as well as the command." In fine condition, with a few trivial creases. Written just two weeks after his promotion to major general, Patton was put in charge of training the full-strength tank corps of the US Army, nicknamed 'Hell on Wheels.'
