Lot 390: Union general (1831–1901) who saw action at Bull Run, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, as well as nearly all the engagements of the Peninsula Campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea. He is generally credited as the composer of the bugle call 'Taps.' ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, November 27, 1868. Letter to Mr. Cowdin. In part: "Thanks for your kind invitation…I may receive a telegraph during the day calling me from the city. If it does not come I shall be there…I am very anxious to come else I should not trespass upon your good nature & kindness by such a conditional reply." In fine condition.
