Lot 356: LS signed "G. E. Pickett, Bvt 1st Lt 8th Inf, Comg Co A," one page, 7.5 x 9.5, November 21, 1848. Letter to Colonel George Talcott. Oversized.Having just recently graduated from West Point as the last-ranked student in the class of 1846, Pickett was sent south to participate in the Mexican-American War. Here he distinguished himself at the Battle of Chapultepec in September 1847 when he carried the American colors over the parapet to capture the Mexican fortress. He received a brevet promotion for his bravery and after the war was stationed at Jefferson Barracks for garrison duty. An exceptionally well-preserved example and one of the earliest Pickett autographs we have offered.
