Lot 238: Manuscript DS, signed "James Otis" and "Nat. Wheelwright," one page, 6.25 x 7.75, September 12, 1763. In part: "I Nathaniel Wheelwright…am bound and obliged to Jane Boucher…in the sum of Four hundred and sixty six pounds thirteen shillings & four pence." Signed at the conclusion by Wheelwright and countersigned by Otis as a witness. In fine condition, with light toning and soiling. Otis, a Massachusetts lawyer, is remembered for coining the phrase, 'Taxation without representation is tyranny,' a rallying cry of the patriotic cause. Wheelwright was one of Boston's leading businessmen but suddenly stopped honoring his debts at the beginning of 1765 and passed away in September of that year.
