Lot 16: Herbert Hoover TLS
9th August 2017
War-dated TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, December 10, 1941. Letter to Mrs. W. J. Deck, in part: "There is only one thing for us to do now—apply every energy to the defeat of Japan. I do want you to know how deeply I appreciate your encouragement." In fine condition. The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor happened only three days earlier on December 7th, and Hoover's successor as president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, gave his memorable 'date which will live in infamy' speech on the 8th, after which Congress voted to declare war on Japan.
