Lot 671: Crippen Dr. Hawley Harvey: (1862-1910) American-Born Physician, Famously Murdered His Wife In 1910. Crippen Was The First Criminal To Be Captured With The Aid Of Wireless Communication. Crippen States That He Has Received His Correspondent’S Analytical Form And Following Careful Examinations Of The Symptoms Finds That €˜You Are Suffering From Otitis Media Sclerotica, That Is To Say, Deafness Caused By A Dry Catarrh Of The Middle Ear’, Continuing To Explain The Cause And Progressive Nature Of The Ailment, €˜Adhesive Bands Have Been Formed In The Middle Ear Which Cause Deafness In Two Different Ways; Those Attached To The Tympanic Membrane Or Drumhead Draw It Inward, Keeping It Tightly Fixed In A Sunken Condition So That It Cannot Properly Respond To The Sound Vibrations, While Others Bind Down The Little Bones Of The Middle Ear In Such A Manner As To Stiffen The Joints, And So Prevent The Freedom Of Motion Essential To Perfect Hearing. Furthermore, By Reason Of The Drying-Up Of The Middle Ear Membrane Caused By The Changes Induced By The Dry Catarrh, The Delicate Ligaments, Muscles And Nerves Are Materially Weakened, Thus Giving Rise To A Condition Which, By Reason Of The Changes Referred To, Is In Itself An Important Cause Of The Loss Of Hearing’ And Further Offering His Remedy Which €˜Can Be Thoroughly And Effectually Accomplished By Means Of Our Appliances And Accessories Which Are Undoubtedly The Most Effective Ever Introduced For The Alleviation And Cure Of Deafness And Noises In The Head’, Stating That The Cost Of Everything Will Be Fifteen Shillings And Commenting €˜As You Will Doubtless Wish To Adopt My Treatment With The Least Possible Delay I Am Having The Necessary Remedies Prepared So That They May Be Sent Off Immediately….The Whole Of The Treatment Is Perfectly Simple And Can Be Used And Applied With Entire Ease In Your Own Home Without In The Slightest Degree Interfering With Your Ordinary Occupations’. Crippen Concludes By Offering A Testimonial From Another Patient Who Had Suffered From A Similar Ailment Which Has Now Been Cured. A Large, Irregular (Although Neat) Tear Appears At The Centre Of The Letter And With Some Further Neat Tears At The Folds, Only Slightly Affecting The Text And Not The Signature.
