Sothebys have sold a 25.59-carat 'Sunrise Ruby' for an astonishing $30.3 Million in a record breaking $160 Million sale.

The ruby smashed its pre sale estimate of $16 Million and set a new world record for a ruby at auction as well as a new record for any stone by Cartier and a new record for any ruby per carat. Other big sellers on the night included a 9.72 carat fancy pink diamond which may have been owned by Princess Mathilde Bonaparte, niece of Napoleon I. It managed a high $15.9 Million.

Further record breaking lots came in the form of a natural pearl and diamond necklace which sold for just over $7 Million, almost double the previous record held by a two strand natural pearl necklace.
