Vintage Schlitz lamps
Vintage Schlitz lamps are lights produced by the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company for the purpose of advertising their beer.
Background and Description
The Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company was based in Milwaukee, and at their height were the largest beer producer in the world, from 1902 until the later half of the century. Schlitz is known as ‘the beer that made Milwaukee famous’.
Schlitz ran numerous successful advertising campaigns. During the early 1970s, they began producing lamps and lighting devices with their name, globe logo, brand, advertisement pictures etc, to hang in bars, shops and other public places.
Vintage Schultz lamps come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including carriage lamp style bar lamps with stained glass, clock displays, globes belted with the Schlitz name, Statue of Liberty holding the Schlitz globe, and tiffany-esque stained glass chandelier with Schlitz name. Some of these spin when switched on.
They generally have brackets for mounting them on walls.
Collecting vintage Schlitz lamps
Vintage Schlitz lamps are a great collecting project, as there were various designs created over the years.
They can be found in antique stores and at auctions, perhaps at flea markets and clearance sales. They were generally used in bars and shops rather than in the home, so may come into the public domain after refurbishment of these places.
Many can be found on online auction site eBay.
Schlitz beer lamps, depending on age and condition and whether they still work, can sell for several hundred, sometimes a couple of thousand dollars.
