Vintage Dooney & Bourke Handbags are highly collectible bags produced by the American company of the same name in the late 20th century.

History & Description

Dooney & Bourke is an American company that specialises in fashion accessories, such as handbags, briefcases, watches, bracelets, luggage and iPod cases.

The company was established in 1975 in South Norwalk, Connecticut, by Peter Dooney and Frederic Bourke. Originally, the partners only produced two products; classic suspenders and brightly coloured surcingle belts. However, by the early-1980s, Dooney & Bourke branched out into the handbag business and produced a number of designs that were instantly successful.

Their most popular brands included the Tack Case and Equestrian handbags, which were both manufactured in bridle leather.

Today, the company produces a limited clothing line and while the majority of products are made for women, there are some products, such as wallets, belts, sweaters and shoes that are made specifically for men.

Guide for collectors

Whilst vintage Dooney & Bourke handbags are occasionally sold through national auction houses, collectors are much more likely to purchase these items from eBay, which regularly advertises a larger and more varied section of vintage products.

Collectors should take caution when purchasing supposedly vintage items from eBay as an items’ authenticity cannot always be verified.

More information on vintage Dooney & Bourke handbags can be found on the company’s official website.
