Interview: handbag collector Vicki Batman
Meet romantic comedy writer Vicki Batman. A self-confessed handbag lover with 100 bags in her collection - and counting.
What do you collect? I'm mostly known for my handbags.
Why? This may sound odd, but I have small, narrow, size seven feet - which means finding shoes to fit is difficult. Finding is not a problem with handbags. I have been given bags, bought for next to nothing, and splurged.
A Mary Frances bag. One of the many bags in Vicki's collection.
How big is your collection? Around 100-ish.
What was your first handbag? I have a handbag someone gave me when I graduated from high school. I won't say when that was…
What's the weirdest piece in your collection? I don't have a weird one. Maybe my Batman lunchbox?
Any strange or funny stories? I do incorporate handbags in my romantic comedy books. The heroine always carries a great bag.
What was your best buy? Aside from the freebies, I paid $3 for a vintage leather one in a soft green, a white rattan clutch, too.
An Enid Collins bag from Vicki's collection
What's your biggest collecting mistake? I found a clear plastic bag shaped like a football in an airport. Yeah, not good. Maybe that is the weirdest piece in my collection.
What do your friends and family think about your collection? Everyone laughs. And borrows sometimes.
What's the one item you would love to own but don't? Well, who wouldn't want to own a real Hermes?
A genuine Hermes - on Vicki's wish list
Any advice for newbies? I may collect handbags, but I use them. I am always amazed by the people who comment on a bag I carry or show off on my blog. I may not carry an extra special one every day.
How much time do you devote to your collection? I am always looking when shopping. But sometimes, I have to go to a specific store for my favorite luxury brand. I "give" myself a celebratory bag, like when I get a contract for a new book (I write romantic comedy short stories and romantic comedy mysteries), birthday, Mother's Day. You get the idea.
What's your favorite cheese? Cheesecake!
What else do we need to know about you? I really have the last name of Batman. I'm Vicki Batman.
Every Monday on my blog - http://vickibatman.blogspot.com - I feature handbags. Some of my own; some from guests.
