Vintage Swivel Barrel Chairs are a style of round-backed chair which are designed to rotate on a base.

Brief history and description

Swivel barrel chairs combine both comfort and a degree of mobility.

Barrel chairs are by their very design wide backed, rounded and built for comfort, allowing the user to recline. Barrel chairs are also often cushioned, and when combined with swivel chair functionality, i.e. the ability to effectively move the chair around due to a panel attached to the underside of the chair, they make for a very popular and inventive vintage find.

Guide for collectors

Vintage swivel barrel chairs have featured prominently at both mainstream and specialist auctioneers, as well as appearing at online auctions such as those found at eBay, where prospective collectors may also find rarer pieces and low prices, though they are advised to carefully check the condition of pieces before purchasing.

The chairs have also appeared at antique furniture shops, where collectors may find additional rare finds.

Further information on swivel barrel chairs can be found at websites such as Lifestyles Furniture, which features additional information on the construction, history and popularity of the chairs, as well as a high quality image gallery.

Value

Vintage swivel barrel chairs have sold for wildly varying prices at auction, as proven by the sale of a pair of barrel back swivel chairs with pink upholstery, which auctioned for just $25 from Dennis Auction Service, Inc. on 20th February 2009; this is in contrast with the price reached from the sale of a tan leather barrel back swivel club chair dated from the early 20th century, which auctioned from William J. Jenack Auctioneers on 18th May 2008 for $100, though the extra price could be attributed to the leather covering and the good condition of the piece.

Elsewhere, a pair of swivel barrel chairs dated from the mid-20th century, in lightly used condition, sold for $150 from Phoebus Auction Gallery on 3rd September 2006.

A pair of Milo Baughman-designed swivel chairs sold for $1,300 in May 2007 at Milea Bros Ltd.
