Vintage George Nakashima Tables are original tables produced by the designer George Nakashima.

History & Description

George Katsutoshi Nakashima was a Japanese-American furniture designer and architect who was best known for his large scale tables made from bulky slabs of wood.

Considered one of the leading innovators of twentieth century furniture design, George Nakashima learnt his woodworking skills in Japan, under the tutelage of Gentaro Hikogawa. Here he was taught traditional Japanese methods of joinery and hand tool techniques.

Nakashima’s most celebrated styles of furniture are his tables which are made of huge slabs of wood, usually oak burl or walnut, which have smooth tops but unfinished natural edges. These unusual and overtly natural designs made Nakashima a pioneer of the American Craft movement.

Guide for collectors

Instances of George Nakashima tables are quite common at auction. However, prices can vary considerably. As a general rule, collectors can expect to pay between $5,000 and $10,000 for a vintage George Nakashima table. However, in the past pieces have been known to sell for $150,000.

Nonetheless, increased sale results for George Nakashima tables over the last decade indicate a burgeoning market for the collection of his works.

George Nakashima produced a range of different styles of tables, including coffee top tables, dining tables, Minguren end tables and pedestal tables.
