Vintage Dorothy Draper Furniture is original furniture produced by the American designer Dorothy Draper.

History & Description

Dorothy Draper was a furniture designer and was one of the leading interior decorators in America in the first half of the twentieth century.

Dorothy Draper’s style of decoration was characterised by bright and exuberant colours and large-scale prints that would take up whole walls. Her furniture followed in the same vein, which was heavily influenced by Baroque and French Rococo themes and embellishments.

Draper has often been accredited with inventing Modern Baroque, a style of decoration in which classical motifs were applied to modern architecture and large public spaces.

In 1929, Draper established what would be the first interior design company in the United States.

Guide for collectors

Perhaps the most prized items of Dorothy Draper furniture are those that were specifically designed for one of her large scale interior projects, such as New York’s Hotel Carlyle, Washington’s Mayflower Hotel or The Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs.

As a general rule, chairs and stools tend to be the most expensive pieces of Draper furniture and prices tend to range between $3,500 and $5,000. Tables, drawers, chests and mirrors typically sell from $1,000 to $1,500.
