Leavens Company Furniture

Leavens Company Furniture is American furniture produced by the Leavens Company of Boston.

Description

Leavens Company was founded in Boston, in 1900, by William Leavens. The company manufactured a variety of styles, notably their "Cottage Furniture", in the Arts and Crafts style. Pieces usually carry a brass plate engraved LEAVENS BOSTON MASS.

Leavens "Cottage Furniture" designs tend to be of a lighter, less square construction than the Arts and Crafts pieces which many rival companies produced. The range included chiffoniers, dressing tables, writing bureaus, desks and dining chairs. The company were heavily advertised, distributing catalogues and trade advertisements. Leavens were well regarded, and remained in business longer than many rivals. They stopped production in 1930.

Guide For Collectors

Arts and Crafts Collector and arts-crafts are websites of general interest to collectors. They carry information about upcoming auctions and have forums where the subject can be discussed with fellow collectors.

Old and Sold is a website which carries advice about furnishing and interior decoration from the period. In the process it lists items made by Arts and Crafts manufacturers, including Leavens, which may be of use to the collector.

Catalogues and advertising leaflets made by Leavens are still available for sale on mainstream websites such as Amazon and eBay, and give an interesting view into the original purpose of pieces.
