Lot 3026: Engraved Winchester Model 1873 First Model Lever Action Rifle
7th May 2017
First Model manufactured in 1876 and subsequently professionally embellished. The engraving pattern is like that of a 1 of 1,000 with floral scroll and punch dot designs on the sides of the receiver, on the side plates, top of the receiver and on the breech end of the barrel. There is a silver inlaid wire band around the breech and muzzle end of the barrel. The top barrel flat is marked with the two line address/King's Improvement patent dates, there is no caliber designation on the barrel or cartridge elevator (correct for early .44-40s), and the upper tang marking is covered by a short range peep sight. The bottom of the cartridge elevator is engraved with a cross hatch and dot pattern. German silver blade front and adjustable rear buck horn sights. Blue barrel and magazine tube, casehardened remaining parts, and mounted with multi-point checkered walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate with compartment containing a four piece cleaning rod.
