7th May 2017
Manufactured in 1887, the second year of production. Dovetailed blade front sight, the rear sight has been removed, a filler block has been installed and there is a mid-range tang mounted peep sight. The two-line address is marked on the top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight, and "40-82 W.C.F." is at the breech. The receiver, forend cap, buttplate, hammer and lever are casehardened. Winchester discontinued the use of casehardened frames on the Model 1886 in 1901. The barrel, full tubular magazine, bolt and trigger are blue. 1884 and 1885 patent dates and the serial number are marked on the lower tang, and the upper tang is marked "- MODEL 1886-". Mounted with a checkered walnut forearm with a steel forend cap and pistol grip stock with a steel shotgun buttplate and gold initial oval. The accompanying Factory letter verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, octagon barrel, and checkered pistol grip stock with a shotgun butt. The rifle was equipped with a set trigger (presently a plain replacement) when it was received in the warehouse on October 13, 1887 and shipped the next day to order number 23828.
