Lot 253: A French Velo 'Dog Scarer' Pistol of the type used by bicyclists in the 1880s and 1890s, a fine example with its original nickel-plating, hardwood grip and fully working mechanism, 2 inch barrel. A Dog Scarer was kept in the coat pocket and used to dissuade unwanted canine attention. Ammunition could be water, pepper or, as in the case of this example, starting-gun caps. (1)
