Lot 2004: Exceptional Documented Winchester Model 1895 Fancy Deluxe Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter
6th May 2017
This is an exceptional example of a Winchester Model 1895 Fancy Sporting Rifle with deluxe, highly figured, checkered walnut stock and forearm. The Cody Firearm Museum letter that accompanies the rifle states that it was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on December 24, 1903. The letter states that the rifle has a "Fancy checkered stock, Shotgun butt with rubber butt plate" and "Oil finish". The 24-inch barrel has a Marble "Sheard" front sight and a Lyman folding leaf rear sight. One rear sight leaf has a wide "V" notch, and the other has a white triangle. An eye for a detachable sling swivel is fitted on the underside of the barrel and the butt. The forward edge of the receiver has a matted finish and a Lyman "WR-WT" adjustable rear sight is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The stock has a checkered steel buttplate. The stock and forearm are the rarely encountered deluxe, highly figured burl walnut with fine checkered panels and an oil finish. The forearm tip has an ebony inlay. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" in two lines between the rear sight and the receiver. The top of the barrel is stamped with the oval Winchester proofmark and the caliber "35 W.C.F." just in front of the receiver. A Winchester proofmark is stamped on the top of the receiver to the left of the matted sighting panel. The Winchester legend and patent markings are located on the left side of the receiver and are covered by the receiver sight. The serial number "41539" is stamped on the lower receiver tang. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER/-MODEL 1895-" in two lines.
