Lot 2003: Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Takedown Lever Action Rifle

Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Takedown Rifle manufactured in 1904. This rifle is complete with a letter from the Cody Firearms Museum Records Office that describes "Winchester Model 1886 - Serial Number 130862" as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 40/82, Barrel Type: Octagon, Trigger: Plain, Checkered stock, Pistol grip, Takedown" and "Less stock Butt plate & forearm". The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on May 2, 1904. The barrel, magazine, bolt and trigger have the standard Winchester charcoal blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver and crescent buttplate have the same Winchester blue finish which was utilized after color casehardening was eliminated as the standard finish on these components in 1900 at about serial number 122000. The hammer and loading lever are color casehardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured, fancy grade walnut with Winchester Style H checkering and a high polish piano finish. The bottom of the pistol grip has an ebony or horn inlay. The barrel has a Lyman folding combination front sight with globe and post/open blade with colored insert and buckhorn sporting style rear sight with serrated edges and screw-adjustable center piece. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "40-82 W.C.F." is stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. "-MODEL 1886-" is roll-stamped on the upper receiver tang. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger, and the serial number "130862" is stamped in script numerals between the tang screws.
