Antique Heinrich Hanwerck Dolls
An antique Heinrich Handwerck doll is a popular German bisque doll designed by Heinrich and Minna Handwerck.
Brief history and description
Although originally the dolls were manufactured by Handwerck in Germany in 1876, and were later manufactured by Kammer & Reinhardt from 1902 to 1932.
Handwerck dolls typically feature almond-shaped "sleep" eyes, doll-faced bisque heads, composition jointed bodies, human hair wigs and feathered brows. Some dolls may also feature open mouths with teeth or pierced ears.
Guide for collectors
Each doll is marked with a mold number or letter along with the word "Handwerck" or "Germany" at the hip. Other words used to mark the dolls include "Baby Cut," "Bébé," "Bebe Cosmopolite," "Bebe de Recalme," Bebe Superior," "Hch," "H," "HH," "HHW," "HW, "Halbig," "LaBelle," "LaBonita" and "Lotti." Dolls which were manufactured by Kammer & Reinhardt bear a mark that reads "oHG."
Some dolls may have also been marked with upside down horseshoe symbols, while others may have been given a body ink stamp. Due to the fact that the company often purchased parts or bodies from other manufacturers, some authentic Handwerk dolls may be unmarked.
Replacing a doll's original clothing or accessories is not recommended.

Frasier's Doll Auction in Oak Grove, Missouri sold:
- A child doll featuring blue "sleep" eyes, painted lashes, molded and feathered brows, pierced ears, an open mouth and an original brown human hair wig for $2,400 in July of 2011.
- A doll featuring brown "sleep" eyes, a brown human hair wig, an antique cotton dress and replaced black suede shoes for $1,300 in January of 2012.
Garth's Auction Inc. in Delaware, Ohio sold:
- A doll featuring brown "sleep" eyes, pierced ears and a blonde mohair wig for $600 in October of 2008.
- A doll featuring a bisque socket head, short, blonde curly hair and a white cotton dress for $125 in October of 2008.
Bertoia Auctions in Vineland, New Jersey sold a doll featuring blue sleep eyes, pierced ears and an antique white dress for $90 in November of 2011.
