Avengers Issue 1 Sold For World Record Price

A 9.6-graded copy of the Marvel comic book Avengers #1 has broken the record price paid for the issue at auction. The sale, held by ComicConnect's affiliate company Metropolis Collectibles, saw the copy sell for a price of $250,000.

According to the company, only three copies of the comic book have been graded as high as CGC 9.6. two copies are owned by private collectors with no intentions of selling, so the copy sold last week became the first 9.6 copy to be publicly sold.

This rarity meant the copy was highly sought after by collectors, and easily suprpassed the pervious top price to sell for $250,000.

The book features the first ever appearance of The Avengers, a team of superheroes that unite to fight common enemies. The initial members included Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and Ant Man, all of whom had previously appeared in their own popular titles. Interest in the series has grown in recent years after the highly publicised production of an Avengers feature film, set for release in 2012.
