SKU JP5720

Great Britain 1840 1d black matching covers to same recipient covering the non registered period and the issue with sending valuables by post during that period.

With the discontinuation of Inland Money Letters on January 1st 1840, there was no secure way of sending Inland Letters with valuables by post.

Top Cover

Great Britain 1840 (September 8th) letter from London, Lombard Street to Doncaster bearing 1d black (plate 1b), SG2 originally containing a "Bank Post. Bill....for £68.18s0d" but could not be registered.

The system did not start for inland mail until 6 January 1841 demonstrating the risk of sending valuables during this 'Non Registration' period.
