NEW GUINEA 1914 Marshall Islands 1s on 1m carmine, SG59

£3,750.00
SKU JC2250

New Guinea 1914 (16 Dec) Marshall Islands 1s on 1m carmine, 3½-4mm space from setting III position 2 (with small stops after 'R' and 'I'), SG59.

Brilliant mint example with original gum. Couple of slightly shortish perforations and a tiny natural inclusion mentioned for accuracy, but a lovely fresh example of this rarity.

When the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force occupied German New Guinea in 1914, it overprinted existing stocks of the German New Guinea Marshall Islands stamps with the initials "G.R.I." (Georgius Rex Imperator), referring to King George V. They were only used for a short period of time and are, therefore, very rare and most surviving examples have condition flaws.

Accompanied with a clear Royal Philatelic Society (RPS) certificate of authenticity (1987).

The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £4,000.
