British Forces in Egypt 1887 set of 10 to 'ONE HUNDRED PIASTRES' on £1 Military Telegraphs, type MT 5/7 surcharges, SGMT17/26.

A fine quality mint set with large part original gum. Only very minor imperfections with slight gum tones. Overall quality is very fine for this set, with fresh colours.

A very difficult set of Military Telegraphs to assemble. Only 1,500 of the 100p stamp, and 2,100 of the 50p were printed. The usage of these stamps was limited as the vast majority were returned to the UK and destroyed.

Accompanied with clear Royal Philatelic Society certificates (1979) for the most valuable stamps in the set, the 50p and 100p.

The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £1,735.

Following the rise of a nationalist movement led by Arabi Pasha, and serious disturbances in Alexandria, British troops landed at Ismailia in August 1882 and defeated the nationalists at Tel-el-Kebir on 13 September.

Military Telegraph stamps were provided for the pre-payment of non-official messages sent by the army telegraph system. They were used by army personnel for private communications, newspaper reporters and the local population (when the army was in control of the telegraph system).
