Rhodesia 1913-22 £1 black and deep purple, head die III, toned paper, SG279.

A fine mint example with large part original gum. There is some minor gum loss from hinge removal, but a really fine example with lovely fresh colour.

A scarce stamp and rarely found so fine. One of the most attractive of this issue because of the very striking and effective colour combination.

The Stanley Gibbons catalogue value is £600.

The "Admiral" issues feature King George V in his Admiral of the Fleet uniform.

Rhodesia, named after Cecil Rhodes, the founder of the British South Africa Company, joined the South African Postal Union on 1 August 1892. At this point, its stamps became valid for international mail. The stamps issued throughout 1890-1923 are all inscribed "British South Africa Company".
