Giacomo Puccini (1858 – 1924), is regarded as one of opera’s finest composers.   La Bohème (1896), Tosca (1900) and Madam Butterfly (1904) are his most celebrated works. Beyond operatic circles he is best known for the aria Nessun Dorma from his unfinished opera Turandot.

This Puccini handwritten music notation features four bars from his celebrated 1904 opera Madam Butterfly.

The notation relates to a small theme from Act 2 in the scene where Butterfly tells Sharpless how as soon as her husband Pinkerton had set off to sea, the marriage-broker had come to see her, proposing various suitors.

Puccini has also expressively signed the notation in the same red fountain pen, dating it March 1908. Puccini signed it in his home town of Torre Del Lago, where he wrote many of his most celebrated operas, including Madam Butterfly.
