Proof 1838 half dollar makes $646K at Heritage Auctions
A proof 1838 half dollar has sold for $646,250 as part of the third Heritage auction of coins from the collection of Eugene H. Gardner.
The dollar is one of the finest known of just nine examples extant and is considered to be one of the rarest and most celebrated coins in the U.S. federal series.
The auction went on to finish with a a sale total of $13.7 Million in New York on May 12th.
