NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) is an organisation dedicated to certifying the quality of rare coins.

Founding and history

NGC was founded in 1987, and for coin grading, its opening heralded the introduction of a new standard of integrity.

From the beginning NGC focused on only one objective, a standard of consistent and accurate grading. As NGC has grown to become the leader in third-party grading services, it has maintained a steadfast and uncompromising commitment to this standard.

The knowledge, integrity and dedication of NGC's team of grading experts aims to ensure a level of grading consistency unparalleled among grading services. This record of consistency, built over the years, has helped to foster greater stability throughout the rare coin marketplace.

Method

To ensure impartiality and accuracy, three numismatic experts, each with decades of successful professional experience in rare coins, evaluate each coin submitted for grading.

A grading finaliser assigns a final grade and the coin is then sonically sealed in a protective, inert plastic holder.

Experts

NGC's full-time grading experts are no longer active in the commercial coin marketplace, and are prohibited from buying or selling coins to ensure impartiality.

Most have been with NGC for many years. The NGC grading team's only interest is in determining accurate grades for coins.

NGC Coin Grading Team

Mark Salzberg, NGC Chairman

One of the world's most respected numismatists, Mark Salzberg has been working in the industry for over twenty years and joined NGC in 1988. Named ANA's Numismatist of the Year in 2006, he is a Life Member of the ANA, received the ANA's Presidential Award in 1998 and is also a member of the Professional Numismatist Guild (PNG).

Rick Montgomery, President

Many industry peers consider Rick Montgomery to be the coin industry's greatest authenticator. Prior to joining NGC in 2002, Rick worked for ANACS and also served as President of PCGS for fifteen years.

A veteran numismatist and key figure in the field, Montgomery co-authored the NGC Grading Guide for Modern US Coins and contributed to the PCGS grading and counterfeit detection guide. He has also written numerous articles for the American Numismatic Association.
